BEAR'S GOOD FWIEND LUCAS

A Jenny & Allie Story

By Jenny Sullivan, Senior Dog Rescue of Oregon Foster Home Coordinator

Bear
As told to Jenny and Allie, the dog, by Bear's new family

When our son, Lucas, was about 18 months old, we decided to get a dog. We knew we didn't want to go through training a puppy so looked for an older dog that had experience in living with a family. I tried a couple of websites, but didn't get lucky until I checked www.SDRO.petfinder.com, Senior Dog Rescue of Oregon's site.

It didn't take long to find the perfect dog. When I called Sue Faria, founder of SDRO, she told me more about Bear, a beautiful Lab. He was an 8 yr old gentle giant and he loved kids.

"Would you like to meet him?" she asked.

"Yes! As soon as possible," I said. "He's a Christmas present for our little boy."

But when SDRO Foster Home coordinator, Jenny, brought Bear to our house I wondered if I'd made a mistake. Bear was huge! Would Lucas be safe with such a large dog?

Luckily, Lucas had no misgivings. He was enthralled! He toddled over, threw his arms around Bear's neck and squealed, "Doggie! Doggie!" I held my breath, but Bear's reaction was to stand perfectly still. He seemed to understand how small Lucas was and how precariously he balanced on his short legs.

My husband and I laugh when recalling Bear's two week "trial" period; the period a dog is supposed to spend with a new family before the adoption is finalized. From the time he walked in, Bear and Lucas were inseparable. Lucas refers to Bear as his "good fwiend", and as part of our family now, Bear goes camping, fishing, surfing and hiking - always placing himself where he can protect Lucas should it be necessary.

Please let everyone know about Senior Dog Rescue and all the wonderful dogs like Bear waiting for a second chance at love. As Lucas says, "Evwry body needs a good fwiend."
